I just purchased the USB NasLite version to hopefully get my server up. I previously purchased the floppy version and was happy with it. Unfortunately, the USB version was not successful. I get a kernel panic when I try to boot from the USB drive.

I disconnected all my HDDs and it still does it. I am running out of ideas:

Hardware:

Asus A7n8
Athlon XP 3200
1gb RAM

Assuming you have 64M+ of RAM, Disable Power Management in your BIOS and retry.

Hi Tony,
Yes, I have 1GB of RAM and have also disabled power management. What I don't understand is that the Floppy Version works fine, but not the USB Flash drive. I'm using a Kingston 256mb Flash Drive. Any ideas?

What are the last couple of kernel message lines before the error?

Looks like bad RAM. Try a different stick of RAM and/or lower the frequency. I had an EPIA board fail with a 256M kingston that way...

I have tried other sticks of RAM and no dice. I have tried various combinations and still nothing.

Why would it work on a floppy and not a flash drive?

The USB version uses additional drivers to do what it does. If it is not getting the behavior it looks for from the hardware, it will simply not run. I still think that the cause of your problem may be eliminated by manipulating BIOS settings. Often BIOS settings tend to be associated in strange ways. For example, some boards will not boot from USB unless USB keyboard support is enabled. Enabling power management on some boards causes Kernel Panic. It's difficult to say really...

In the past, I've had Kernel Panic conditions caused by BIOS settings (primarily power management, USB settings and PnP PCI/ISA configuration, etc.), as well as RAM. If you have exhausted the possibilities, then i'd say the problem may be caused by hardware incompatibility.

Try setting the BIOS to the safe/default settings, I recently had a GeForce4 AGP card that would not let the machine post because of the BIOS settings, setting it back to the defaults fixed the issue.

I had this problem with an Asus P4P800-VM motherboard, 512Mb of Crucial PC 3200 and an Intel P4 1.6Ghz processor. It turned out to be the USB setting in the BIOS. Changing the speed from USB 2.0 (480Mb/s) to USB 1.1 (12Mb/s) fixed it.

BIOS settings solved the problem for me too. I don't know exactly what it was, but I turned off everything that wasn't necessary. Com, lpt, power management, and some other things I don't remember. It booted fine after that.
