After having problems updating the password restricted BIOS in my NutShell 1030N I was sure I it would be a piece of cake installing NAS Lite (That was my plan anyway ;-))

After copying the files from the DATA directory on the CD and attempting to boot the 1030N (without a hard drive or USB dongle installed) the system locks up. The last line that is displayed is "POSIX conformance testing by UNIFIX".

I've tried booting several times. Every time the machine locks up at the same place. After about 5 minutes the screen goes black and the only recovery is to power off the machine.

How should I proceed?

Thanks... Alan

Can you list the steps that you took to get to this point? Did you reflash the BIOS with the factory default rather than the password protected one you got with the unit?

It sounds like it's booting but the kernel hangs on hardware detection. You'll have to get into the BIOS and tweak settings as necessary. I'd turn off anything you don't need and turn on only the hardware that you'll be using.

LPT, COM, power management, etc. should be disabled.

Tony, the following is the list of steps that I have performed so far:

1) I flashed the BIOS with the tool/BIOS file that I received from Tony at GTC-Allwell. The name of the tool was AWDF733.EXE and the BIOS was named GCT1030N.BIN. The BIOS file was dated 9/11/2003.

2) I set the BIOS to boot from the C drive

3) I booted a PC-DOS 7.0 hard drive that had the fdisk, format, syslinux (current version downloaded from authors web site), and the contents of the NASLite CD.

4) "format d:"

5) "syslinux d:"

6) I copied all of the files from the NasLite Data directory (Note there was one more file than was listed in the documentation - bs.??? - sorry I forgot the file type)

7) I set BIOS to boot from SCSI, C

8) I shut down the machine and removed the hard drive.

When I boot the system locks up after "POSIX conformance testing by UNIFIX". I have the same problem if the dongle is connected or not. I'll try disabling the BIOS non-essentals and let you know what happens.

Thanks... Alan

Tony, I was having a hardware problem. The machine had two 32MB memory sticks. I removed the second one and the machine boots now.

Thanks for your help... Alan
