Hi all, newbie to this NAS thing and i`m a bit baffled as to why my shiny new 160Gig Samsung HDD is only showing up as 127G capacity.
When i check the info on the disk there is a message about Host Protected area => 1 and Cannot use LBA48 Capacity reduced.

Any Ideas?
:?

I`ve tested the Hdd as best i can, reformatted to NTFS (149Gb) and then back to Ext2 (149Gb) using Paragon Partition Manager 6, but when i try to mount the disk i keep getting the Host Protected Area & LBA message (as above).
I`ve been searching the forums for some kind of help but can`t find any, does NASLite+ need a patch to enable HDD`s over 137Gb or is it just my bad luck...?

All answers appreciated.........

There's nothing wrong with your drive, 160g is the unformatted capacity, the formatted capacity (the drive actually holds) will be less.

Hard drive manufactures advertise unformatted capacity, instead of the lower formatted number.

I know i will lose some capacity due to formatting , that`s not the problem, It`s that when formatted with either NTFS or Ext2 the drive shows 152.35Gb but when i try to mount the disc in NASLite i get the Host Protected Area =>1 Cannot Use LBA48 error messages.
Having surfed for answers, i have found out that the Host Protected Area is a portion of the disc which is reserved for an invisible partition which can be used for backup install files by OEM`s.
I have since found out that my drive is not a retail one but an OEM.
Question how do i remove the HPA is there a utility to do it , since i know nothing of linux and can`t seem to get a simple stripped down version that boot`s off CD.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In some isolated cases, a buggy IDE controller may be incompatible with the drivers used by NASLite. The resulting conditions apparently causes a portion of the driver to detect the large disk, while another portion decides that the controller cannot handle LBA48. At that point, you'll get a reported max of 137G. I'd recommend you not use that drive with that controller since the filesystem is likely to become corrupt.

I'd probably go as far as to advise you not to use NASLite with that board.

Hope that helps.
