On any machine, any software that uses DAAP will work (
here is a list on Wiki). Didn't test it but WinAmp, VLC, FooBar2000 etc work also (using DAAP or their own library service). Most of the software on the market can find the files on any server and make you a library. M2 version may be more friendly if you use iPad, game boxes.
The 2 versions are the most stable and reliable servers I've used (and I'm using computers since 1979...). If your main use will be file sharing, then buy the plain vanilla version. If you'll be using (or think you may be using) multimedia on DAAP compliant items, go for the extra buck and get the M2.
