When booting from a Compact Flash card in a CF>IDE adapter I have never had a boot problem with any of the NASLite variants.

I wanted to change from the internal (i.e. fiddly to upgrade O/S as I have to open up the server) CF>IDE solution to an external USB solution, so I am using a 1GB DataBar as the boot device.

Unfortunately, while finding this device to boot the O/S from *every* time, it often fails to find the same device as the configuration device and faults out with a "no configuration device" error (it was looking for a floppy - there isn't one in my server). Changing nothing, other than rebooting, if I reboot often enough it will eventually find the USB stick as the configuration device.

What's *really* galling here is that it is both intermittent and inconsistent. How does it manage to boot the NASLite kernel and then fail to find the configuration device when the boot device and configuration device are the same thing!?!

I'm going to try out a different USB stick to see if that makes a difference.

cannot answer your question but why not get one of the ide/cf adaptors that fit on a pci back panel - a couple of quid on ebay - just attach it to a standard ribbon cable and attach a floppy power connector and your cf card is sticking outside the back of the computer

handy if you need to boot from linux - i keep that on a 2gig cf card - makes it all very easy

Good thought - though I would have to get an extension to the floppy power lead that used to power the CF>IDE adapter mounted at the "back" of the motherboard (case is in two chambers - drives & PSU in one side; motherboard in other).

they are available - that or a soldering iron and some heatshrink to extend what you have now
